The iconic orange Volvo 240s that connected Sweden from the 1970's to 1993. Hundreds of technicians drove these vehicles across the country, making telecommunications accessible to every Swedish citizen.
Televerket was the Swedish government telecommunications agency responsible for Sweden's telecommunications infrastructure. Originally established in 1853 as Kongl. Elektriska Telegraf-Verket when the first Morse telegraph line opened between Stockholm and Uppsala, the organization evolved through multiple names (Telegrafverket after 1860) before becoming Televerket in 1953.
For over 140 years, Televerket held a de facto monopoly on Swedish telecommunications, building and maintaining the infrastructure that connected the entire nation. At its peak, the company employed approximately 1% of Sweden's entire workforce and was considered one of the world's most successful and efficient telecommunications organizations.
The Orange Fleet: From the mid-1970s through 1993, hundreds of Televerket technicians drove bright orange Volvo 240 company vehicles across Sweden. The distinctive orange color (officially RAL 2003 Pastel Orange) was selected for "traffic safety" — the cars needed to be visible in any weather condition and terrain, from snowy northern forests to urban streets.
The Volvo 240 wagon was the perfect utility vehicle for telecommunications work: reliable, spacious enough for equipment, and capable of handling Swedish roads in all seasons. These vehicles became an iconic sight across Sweden, a symbol of the state's commitment to universal telecommunications access.
In 1993, following telecommunications deregulation mandated by the Riksdag, Televerket was corporatized and renamed Telia AB, making Sweden the first European country to fully deregulate its telecom market. The orange Volvos were subsequently sold off, though many remain on Swedish roads today, minus their Televerket logos, treasured by enthusiasts as rolling pieces of telecommunications history.
Televerket and Volvo's Electric Future: In 1976, Televerket partially financed Volvo's experimental Elbil (electric car), one of Sweden's first electric vehicles. These early EV prototypes were used by Televerket staff in Gothenburg for mail delivery and short-distance service calls, demonstrating both organizations' commitment to environmental innovation decades before electric vehicles became mainstream.
